Game 2 for the Wild Turkeys initially seemed to be in peril. As of the previous work day (Friday) there were not enough players signed up to play the game and Sam was worried about the very real possibility that the team may have had to declare a very rare forfiet. Only 7 men had committed and no women had indicated their intentions. A frantic note went out to the team and the results were amazing. I must say that I was very proud of our team, and especially of the women. By Sunday afternoon Sam had commitments from 8 men and 4 women. The final count was 10 men and 5 women! What a great bunch of people! While the team can't always expect such a result, it's nice to know that you all care.
The game itself started off with a bang. We started scoring and seemed to bat very well. By the end of the first inning we were up 5-0. Mark and Bill each had doubles in the first inning. Meera came out itching to get on base. In pre-game batting practice she was hitting everything way over the heads of the people retreiving the balls. She ended up 2 for 3 at bats in the game scoring in the first inning. Debbie played a steady game at first and was 3 for 3 at bat scoring each time! After two innings it was 10-0. New team member Melissa, in her first ever softball game first ever at bat, swatted one down the third base line and beat out the throw for a clean single and eventually scored. Defense was equally well played in the first three inings with our folks holding them to only 2 runs by the end of the third inning. Tim spent his time on the mound pitching and was joined by Russ as the closer. Katie was solid at second base and short field, and was able to hit to first base in the third inning. We were joined a little late by Chris who took over the catching duties that were once the sole reason for Jack's pleasure at softball. Once again both Meera and Hannah showed that previous experience is valuable in judging the high fly balls. Each of them were able to continuously track, move to, and make difficult catches to stall the opponents efforts at critical moments. Wonderful play. In Dave's first game with the team this year he had an unusual game...making several on-target throws from deep center field to the plate. What's up with that? And as usual Gerardo spent all his innings in left field making one good stop after another and consistently backing up his center fielder. Good habits. Jose put in his three innings at short stop making sure our defense was up to the task. That said, by the end of the third inning with the score at 13-2 we suddenly had a defensive "brain freeze". The Titans were able to close the gap in a single inning scoring 10 runs. Then they scored more to go ahead in the top of the final inning. So what was the solution to our prediciment? Our RALLY TURKEY! Out it came, and a few squeezes later we were pumped up and ready to close out the game. We were at the top of the batting order and Mike started it off with a clean single. Debbie, Jose, Gerardo, Mark, Meera all reached base. Gerardo was the winning run after having held up on Meera's earlier hit, and when Bill came up his clean single was all it took! We just love our Turkey!
The Turkey of the Week was a tight race and was given to Meera for her excellent movement to the ball to catch the big high flys as well as her excellent hitting. Way to go Meera!
Again, we thank Jack for just showing up to score the game for us. The line score for the game:
