Game 3 for the Turkeys was played in fairly cool weather after all forecasts were for warm and sunny. But what a blast! What great team spirit! The call for attendance went out early in the week to which the team responded with an attendance of 16 players. Many, many men and almost all the women on our roster. This made for each member getting three to four innings play for the six defensive innings played. Plenty of time to watch, learn, and laugh at our teammates antics/mistakes/misfortune (of which there were plenty). We batted, we fielded, we lost. Then we partied and watched the Lakers loose. Still, it was a good time. The pictures at Round Table tell the story. Mark, Sam, Melissa, Hannah, and Mike closed down the Round Table by finishing off the Lakers game. You would have never thought this was the loosing team!
We took time to go to the batting cages...but, as it turned out, our throwing was...well...not so good. And Mark provided the perfect illustration of how to race around the bases, making it to second with plenty of time to spare...and then stroll to third...where he was easily put out! "Mark, you never, ever, never, ever make the first out on a unforced running error to third." Still, his hit was enough to knock Melissa in for the score.
The final score was the result of two seven run innings by the goats. We scored a five run inning, but were stopped by great plays on their defense. Our defense on the other hand...well, it's the team veterans that let us down this week. Several of us were looking forward to Round Table by the fourth inning. Other than that we were always within touch. The first inning of the game was well played with the Turkeys leading behind Hannah's first run. We held them to zero runs. There was some delightful individual play. Sam made a great stop of a liner back to the pitching mound. We all cheered...that he wasn't injured. Jon played well in left field both backing up third and going for the balls hit his way. Mike, for his part, was doing much the same in right field. Still, with all this the Goats seemed to be able to hit the ball where our defense wasn't.
Our offense finally opened up in the fifth inning with Bill leading off and making base safely. Melissa's speed wasn't quite enough to get her on after her shot down third baseline was cleanly fielded and thrown. Out by only inches. Mark then smacked a homer. The team followed with five more runs off singles from Jon, Gerardo, Nancy, Jose, Mike and Debbie (Nancy and Debbie being picked off by throws after making first safely). Great lesson here, singles are the bread and butter in C-league. After this flurry of scoring the Turkeys could do no more. Not ever our Rally Turkey had the mojo to bring us victory.
The Turkey of the Week was Jon for the hitting (including one homer), running, fielding, sliding and all-around good play in this loosing cause. He played with an aching back which makes it all the sweeter for him. Congrats Jon.

The defensive lineup for this game is given below. We didn't have to field in the bottom of the seventh. |

On offense, Sam wants to try something new. He will publish the offense using his own shorthand. His shorthand is his own...and we know what that means: more geeky stuff to figure out if we're interested in stats. |
