What a beautiful day for a softball game. The weather for Game 5 against the Paper Tigers was ideal. Warm, dry, sunny, with a slight breeze to keep it really comfortable. We were all there in time for the game...eventually. Some excitement was generated upon Matt's arrival...for his first game of this season. Of course, Nancy had to give him grief for only just now showing up for a game. We had 10 men and 4 women, which made for plenty of fun and opportunities for rest and good humor at our teammates expense.
This game was a classic pitchers duel. Low scoring and rapid innings. The game was over by 7:15 having played 7 full innings. At the conclusion of the game there was a heated debate over the "Turkey of the Week". The team was split into factions...it was brother against brother, a real civil war. The debate raged one direction and then another. With no clear winner in site, and amongst the cacophony of sound and color and motion and with all the world spinning the final honor was ultimately conferred upon Phil. Again, Mark was sent packing...back to the showers to try again next week, the coveted honor slipping from his grasp. Mark was last seen with a beer mug in one hand and a pizza slice in the other...big doe-like watery eyes staring into space wondering what could have been.
The team met at Round Table to recall the good, the bad, and the ugly. How could a softball game be so low scoring? What steps need to be taken? Better recruiting? A more comprehensive spring training regimen? More star talent? Higher pay? Free agency? A better position in the draft? All good questions that the coaching staff and team management will have to ponder as the season progresses.
At night's end a headcount showed that no less than 10 players were present. Team spirit abounds this year as attested by this fact. For the first five games of the season, there have never been fewer than this number to congregate for post-game get-together. A ray of light was the appearance of Melissa at dinner. While not able to come to the game due to work responsibilities (yuk), she was clearly thinking right to decide to join the team for the post-game fun. This illustrates the spirit of the Turkey that we all share. Sam, Mark, Melissa, and Russ shut down the Round Table. Getting to be a habit. We now know that the vacuum means it's time to go...
