Well, what can one say about this game. After being up by 13 runs at one time, the Homers played a steady game and finally found their bats. After a couple of big run innings the game ended up with the Homers holding off the charging Turkeys. At this time I have'nt seen the scoresheets but I think the score was 21-17. The Turkeys agreed that the Homers grand slam (by Richard) in the latter part of the game would have been stopped if Matt was there to range all about center field...OK, maybe it's just Mark that thinks that. But then again Mark thinks Matt can do 'bout anything in the outfield.
There were three memorable plays on defense. Nancy made a fantastic stop of one of Richard's very hard hit hot grounders to second base. She used her glove, arm, ribs, and whatever else to stop it and then calmly threw him out at first...amidst the hoots and hollers of her teammates. Monica (still nursing a sore leg) also made a good stop in shortfield and then made the throw to second to get the force play. Memorable in that she hasn't played in so long that just knowing what to do is memorable...at least for the kids on the sideline cheering for mommy! And Mark made a full tilt running stop across the infield to snare a floating liner (if there is such a thing) and rob poor 'ole Jeff of another hit. Only Rosana noticed that Mark is quite a bit slower than before...and that his full tilt run includes quite a bit of tender limping on sore feet. And the offensive playe of the day...and you can pick what meaning you want by "offensive"...goes to Andre who managed to outrun a throw from Richard to Scott (shortstop to first) by a quarter step, only to stumble-bumble-tumble. Through this reporters squinted eyes it was quite reminiscent of Sams interesting style of baseruning.
The team was joined late in the game by Erisa who took command of the right outfield and played a tight inning or two. Gerardo is already showing his speed and skill...we'll see plenty more of that as the season matures. Lisa is starting up again as a Turkey after a long haitius. She was like a vacuum cleaner at first base but is working to get back into the "swing" of hitting. Everyone else played like mid-season form...scary.
The night ended with all but three of the players going to the pizza dinner. We jumped into the benches that the Homers usually take when showing up at the same place...but they were a no-show tonight. As the evening wore on we were surprised by Hannah's sudden appearance. She was welcomed with screems of delight...well...at least from Mark's screems of delight. She ate...then headed back to work. We're looking forward to seeing her in the field. Sam noted that this team is so dependable that all a teammate needs to know is that there's a game that day to know that there'll be a crowd at pizzza that night!
So here's the box score (as soon as Sam sends it...don't even have last week's yet):
