Turkeys Claw Tigers, 25-16, with Historic 16-Run Inning
recap by Sam
We only had 10 players present and able to take the field in the 1st inning (plus Nancy, who could bat but didn't play on defense). Eventually we had 15 players in our batting order after latecomers arrived. Josh decided to play, as well as Elizabeth's brother John, or else we would have started the game shorthanded.
The Wild Turkeys fell behind 7-0 after two innings, and the score felt hopeless at that point because the Paper Tigers had really creamed us for 7 runs with a lot of hard hits in the top of the 1st, while we had meekly made 6 outs among our first 7 batters. But then after we had our full lineup we erupted in the 3rd to score an historic all-time Turkeys record of 16 runs in one inning. We batted around our whole lineup of 15 players, and 6 batters got to bat twice. Except for Mark's ground-rule double and Josh reaching 2nd on a two-base overthrow, none of our other 16 batters who reached base in that inning got more than a single or a one-base error. But it all added up to 16 runs by the time the inning was over.
This is likely the highest scoring single inning in Turkeys' history. Our 16 runs were just enough to keep from invoking the mercy rule, given that we started the inning trailing by 7.
We couldn't rest on our historic achievement, however, because the Tigers immediately countered with another 7-spot of their own in the top of the 4th, by getting 9 consecutive baserunners after we had retired their first two batters. But the Turkeys continued to score some more runs of our own in the next two innings, and we beat them by a final score of 25-16.
