Recap Game'07-10: Scoresheets | Play-by-Play Summary* | Photos

*To read the play-by-play game summary, you will have to learn Sam's syntax for describing the play-by-play action.

Ugh. After a five game winning streak the Gravity Frwags hand us a hard fought loss. Without making excuses, the recent end of the B-league may have played a factor as there were some hitters present that were clearly a cut above. Our defense started the game out with some beautiful softball, getting a double play by way of long fly out followed by a cutoff throw to home that got their runner in a pickle between second and third. When we got our first at bat the result was a 1-2-3 inning. At that time it appeared that a long defensive battle was in the outing...until their big hitters came up. Several balls flew past the outfield of the game that was going on at the south field. Our bats seemed quiet for the next few innings. Then, after falling down 1-9 we began to hit. Soon we were at 5-10 and looking good. Again our defense saw some incredible play. Erisa showed impressive speed running from center field to back Mike up at right field, retrieving the ball and getting it to Maggie in the cutoff position in short order. For her part, Maggie showed great tracking of a towering fly ball by backing up, backing up, backing up and just in front of Dave finally making the catch. Sarah showed that she has the strongest arm on the team when she gunned the runner out from her position at shortstop...with some thanks to Mark making an acrobatic catch to get the out. And as usual, Gerardo made several incredible catches on the run to absolutely rob several batters of extra base hits...instead dealing them heartbreaking outs. There's not much to say about the batting...it was hot and cold with no particular great event...other than Jose's one run home run. For quite some time Maggie had the only ligitimate hit...quite a feat with this team of usually prolific batters. All in all the game was at times exciting, at other times frustrating (Mark lost his voice at one point...no apologies), at still other times maddening (leaving players on base). Still it was a great opportunity for us to face a team with this many big hitters. Again, without making excuses, one should notice that this team was beat by LAMP Fringes, a team we crushed 17-2. However their game occured on a Monday...when their B-leagers weren't available to them. We should be proud of our defense in this game, and recognize that as a strictly C-league team we're really sitting pretty.

We were well represented with sixteen players signed up and fifteen showing up to the game. And twelve of us met at the regular spot to eat, drink and be merry.

Mark forgot his camera...can you believe it! Still, Sarah happened to have hers with her and she snapped several shots. When she gets them to me I'll get them posted. Also, the inning by inning score and defensive/offensive isn't available just yet. When Sam gets 'em to me I'll post them.

**** Addendum added after the fact **** Sam sent this short note...he was surprised to see I hadn't reported this typically C-league wild play (or is that wild turkey play?) that generated a lot of fun. Here's Sams description...

This game featured one of those "only in C League" plays that leaves you scratching your head and wondering "how do you score that?"  With no outs and Gravity Frawgs on 1st and 2nd in the 6th inning, their next batter hit a soft arcing liner over Bill's head at 3rd.  Bill backpedaled and made a terrific leaping catch for the out.   The Frawg on 2nd held, where he was about to be joined by the Frawg on 1st, who totally underestimated Bill's chances of catching the batted ball.  Bill threw in the general direction of both Frawgs at 2nd, but his errant throw went into rightfield, where Mike alertly picked it up and relayed it to Debbie at 1st to retire the Frawg who forgot to tag up.   But the Frawg who did tag up scored all the way from 2nd during the roundabout throw.

I originally called this play a sacrifice fly double play.  Jack originally gave Bill a throwing error.  Upon further reflection, I've now scored this play simply as "F5" to retire the batter, followed by "5-9-3" to complete the double play, with the other Frawg runner advancing two bases to score on this throw sequence.  No error, no sacrifice fly.  No sacrifice fly, because the runner who scored initially held at 2nd after Bill's catch and only broke for 3rd after drawing Bill's throw.  No error either, because Bill's apparently errant throw was actually part of the successful 5-9-3 throw sequence that did retire the runner that Bill tried to throw out.  It's just as if Bill had made a non-errant but extremely weak throw directly to 1st, 5-3. allowing a speedy runner sufficient time to advance two bases on the throw.

**** End Addendum **** Wow...told as only Sam can tell it...
