*To read the play-by-play game summary, you will have to learn Sam's syntax for describing the play-by-play action.
Tonight's game against the Titans was one for the records...their records. Showing up with only 11 players, 2 of them women, the Titans began to have batting practice against the Turkeys. While I hate to start a game report on such a down note, the truth is the truth. We had trouble finding our bats. Our big hitters...didn't. The women seemed to do what the men couldn't at the plate. After a 1-2-3 first inning, Josh got us fired up with a double. We managed to get some hits and enough runs to save some offensive face. Our defense was there, but their hitting seemed to be wherever we weren't. Many doubles on their part, several overthrow errors on ours. On the other hand, there were some notable efforts by Sarah and Hannah. Sarah owns the left side of the field. She made two acrobatic diving catches. The first a liner to her right that was snagged in full stretching dive, the second a diving catch in foul territory up the third base line. Both dives in the dirt. And both taking their toll on Sarah who showed up at pizza after the game with significant scrapes on her knee and hip. Hannah has become an intelligent and also acrobatic first baseman. She seemed to grow as a ball began to (apparently) sail over her head...but no, she gets it and has the presence to come down to find the base and get the runner out. In another play a poorly thrown ball on the first base line pulled her off the base where she caught it and proceded to tag the approaching runner. Great plays for both Sarah and Hannah. In other excitment Matt made a fine run to catch a ball hit to left field, which also caught the aggressive baserunner well off second and towards third. Matt threw it to Elizabeth who was smartly covering second where it unfortunately sailed over her head...right into Mark's glove. Mark had observed the play and realized that this event was a possibility and leaving his position at first base ran to back Elizabeth up where the ball fell into his glove. The race was on towards second...where the runner slid into base under Mark's diving attempt to get him out. Both runner and fielder were consumed in a cloud of dust...where the runner was safely laying on his back over the base and Mark laying on him. It was fun even if it wasn't an out. But it underscored the difficulty the Turkeys had in getting those precious outs that are so important in C-league.
By the time the game was over the Turkeys were down by 13 runs...but not defeated. How could this team be defeated...we base our success on how many show up and how many enjoy the post-game pizza dinner. This week 11 of us convened at the Round Table where we recalled the game and made plans for our next opponent...the Bruisers who we love so much to play. Sarah's camera was the only one at the game. As soon as they are available, pictures will be posted.
The box score for the game and the offensive/devensive stats will be posted when Sam reviews and sends them to me. Sarah brought her camera. She and Mark took pictures for posterity.

Sam asks all players to review the scoresheet before he computes these statistics. The .pdf of the scoresheet is available for this purpose. Please send comments for any mistakes you pick up. |
